Decorate with Stories

Furnish your room for conversation and the chairs will take care of themselves, Sybil Colefax

When it comes to furnishing your home we’re great believers in the importance of telling a story whether that be through a specific theme or by choosing key pieces that have a character of their own if a room has an interesting tale to tell, it’ll more often than not be a space that people will enjoy spending time in.

From a practical point of view themes are one of the easiest ways to give a room a clear sense of direction; they’ll not only make the decorating process easier but ensure that everything hangs together. Think of it as setting a stage.

While ‘trends’ are always a tricky term and we wouldn’t advocate subscribing to their every whim they are a great way to explore new ideas and shape a look of your own.

This season we’ve taken inspiration from around the globe and crafted five beautiful new themes:

LIBRA l Modern Gothic

MODERN GOTHIC

This striking theme sees classic Victorian-style furniture paired with a contemporary warehouse vibe. Think dark turned-leg furniture, plush velvets and grand chinoiserie pieces placed in distressed, almost derelict surroundings.

Lush green palms contrast with shadowy walls, flashes of beaded blue sateen glimmer in darkened hallways and polished ceramics in blues, whites and deep maroons illuminate cobwebbed corners. There’s a touch of theatrical drama to this theme but it is by no means frivolous. These pieces are for keeps; classic, solid and carefully made heirlooms.

LIBRA l Coastal

COASTAL

Coastal themes can be interpreted in any number of ways, from old-school Riviera style glamour to a classic ‘red, white and blue’ nautical look. We prefer to take our inspiration directly from the shoreline in all of its distressed beauty.

Furniture is chunky, weighty even, but given an easeful grace with pale finishes and pretty ticking stripes. Reclaimed teak and elm is paired with sea-green recycled glass, delicate feather motif ceramics and husky basketry. This is a contemporary and fresh take on the theme but with a distinct nod to classical shapes. It is a place to escape, to carefully display your beach-combed treasures and to fling the windows open to the salty air.

LIBRA l Equestrian

EQUESTRIAN

A theme that is chic, pared back and luxurious. Steel and glass furniture reflect light whilst powerful horse sculptures hint at equine design influences. Shades of silver, grey and cream are now accented with verdant botanical greens, bringing the theme up to date. Rugged wood pieces give texture and interest and when paired with proud hurricane lanterns and beautiful time pieces will showcase an earthy luxury.

LIBRA l Copper Rose

COPPER ROSE

Copper is still at the centre of our trend radar but this season it’s been given a fresh face with soft tones of blush pink, bronzy glass and deep nutty woods. Geometric patterns found in pieces such as our Copper Web collection are the perfect partner and will give this look a clean, contemporary feel.

A balance between structure and softness can be achieved by combining Mid-Century style furniture in rich wood finishes with accessories and object that take their lead from the natural world.

LIBRA l Chandelier Factory

CHANDELIER FACTORY

This season we’ve been developing a softer sub-plot to the classic industrial trend: Chandelier Factory. Pairing wrought iron, chunky woods and raw concrete with intricately constructed show-stopping chandeliers, this theme juxtaposes masculine elements with softness, tactility and light. Like a beautiful scene from a dark fairytale, this delicately constructed look weaves a story of its own.
