All that Glitters: How to Decorate with Metallics

Elegant metallic finishes can be found the heart of many of this season’s interior trends and for good reason. A touch of gold, copper or sleek silver instantly adds a sophisticated and glamorous touch to any space. Whether you go all out with a statement piece or enjoy mixing smaller accent pieces to create a clever cocktail of materials in and around the home, you can’t go wrong with these shimmering touches when it comes to giving your rooms an opulent edge.

This versatile trend not only lends itself to eccentric lighting but to all manners of furniture and decoration it’s even found way into our kitchens and bathrooms. Copper is ideal if you are wanting to create an atmosphere of antiquity it can be used to create a striking, contrasting influence in a room or it can also be used to subtlety incorporate a shabby-chic tone. Dot decorative pieces around your home if you are looking to bring this trend to life think accent chairs, clocks, photo frames and vases. Copper and geometric honeycomb shapes pair especially well together and go nicely with glass and marble surfacing.

A simpler way to add little metallic touches to your home is to select sofas, dining or occasional furniture pieces which feature small dashes of silver or chrome. Although minimal, they will complement the overall look and feel of your home and give it a cool, industrial feel. You could also opt for including a practical item such as a lamp or shade to subtly bring the metallic theme into your space without the fear of overdoing it. This works especially well if you have a subdued and neutral colour scheme throughout the home such as grey, light blue and white.

Perhaps the most exciting part of the metallic trend however, is the flexibility to mix and match. Don’t be averse to taking this luxe look one step further and using one type of metal as the central point of the space while working in other finishes for a smaller accent role. This will no doubt guarantee an ultra-cool finish no matter the space.
