(Daylight) Room Saving Time

Clocks

Well we’re at that time of year again, how has it come around again so quickly? Gorgeous gold and tawny leaves decorate our pavements and our heating is tentatively being switched to ‘on’. But of course, it’s also when our clocks are turned back, where we’re plunged into darker evenings and our morning alarms go off in our pitch black bedrooms.

But rather than letting this get us down, let’s embrace the clock. Let’s turn them back with glee and in the same breath let them adorn our walls with a sense of pride.

Clocks have been gaining momentum in the interiors world as a key piece to use in our schemes. They not only serve a valuable function but come in so many different styles and scales that a really good one can really transform a room. As William Morris wisely said ‘have nothing in your house that you do know to be useful or believe to be beautiful’. Clocks are perhaps one of the few decorating accessories we can truly justify to be both.

Oversized clocks look particularly good in period properties, where ceilings are high and walls are broad. Skeletal designs such as Libra’s Jumbled Numbers Iron Skeleton Clock almost become part of the architecture of the building. Often they lend a reclaimed vibe, as if rescued from an old railway station and they rarely need accompanying wall art or pictures…this style of clock can simply be hung centrally and left to do all of the talking (or tick tocking) themselves.

Current kitchen trends (where surely clocks are most needed for timing your tricky gourmet creations!) dictate a slightly more retro style. Larger clocks can still of course be used but usually cupboards, shelves and storage in a kitchen means that wall space is more limited. A vintage inspired clock will work perfectly in this kind of space, try Libra’s small Kensington Wall Clock for adding interest and style whilst still being a necessary culinary tool.

If wall space is tight but you still want to use clocks to decorate your home, have a think about small mantel or desk clocks as part of a personal mini curated vignette. For a real design talking piece go for the Jumbo Nickel Bulbous Clock which will add a Victorian collectable eccentricity to your display. Styled in front of dark painted panelled walls, bell jars full of curiosities and old map prints, you’ll have a striking assembly to enjoy through the winter.

And for perhaps a softer look, for spaces such as a bedroom mantelpiece, an understated carriage style clock such as the small Amabassador square clock will always look beautiful next to your favourite reads, a jewellery box and some billowing peonies.

With William Morris to back us up, who are we to argue that we need these fantastic additions to our schemes? And don’t forget to thank your timepiece once it’s taking pride of place on your wall, after all, they’ve just given you an extra hour in bed.
